    Two different problems here.

Ok, but how can i be sure it IS in fact connected to the network when the laptop won't find anything that is shared,

Can you ping the routers IP address?

connect the laptop directly to the router with an ethernet cable.

i can't really do this easily to be honest, and maybe it wouldn't really solve the problem as i need the laptop in a seperate room, to be wirelss etc etc

Start, Run type cmd then OK, type ping 192.168.1.1 into the black window.

where 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of your router.

'request timed out' and a bit more about 4 packets sent, none received, therefore 4 lost

But it removes any initial wireless problems from the equation while you're ensuring the settings are correct for your internet connection, etc. Once you can connect to the net wired, you can move on to getting it via wireless :)

Just use the cable from the PC for the time being, unless it's hard to reach.

So until you can ping the router i.e. establish a connection to it, forget the rest! e.g. file sharing etc.
