Thanks everyone for your advice and support.. Well after a sleepless night and a couple of hours pacing up and down, I bit the bullet and phoned (sorry Herbie) the HMRC distraint office expecting to be torn off a strip and to be told that they would be round to take everything in the house and a kidney for good measure...
But you were right Debt23 the lady I spoke to was not as bad as I thought, she asked about my assets and seemed to undertand that I did n't have any... she even laughed when I said that I could fill up the car with petrol just to double its value. I've got sometime to sort some of my affairs out particularly some of the provisional figures I had to use on my return, this may get the amount owed reduced a little, but I have to keep them posted by specific dates.
The main thing for now is that there is n't going to be a knock on the door, and I've got a little time to think!!
I may still borrow the money...I have still got to pay up even though the immediate crisis is averted, I think I agree with thevinternet it just seems "safer". I wondered what others thought??
Anyway, if anyone is following this thread in the same sort of position with the taxman I would just reiterate the advice the good people here gave me, get in touch with them asap.....

who calculated your tax for you?
You, HMRC or an accountant?
If they were provisional figures then you really need to get a final return in.
If you use an accountant it may cost you in the short term but they will save you the fee in tax most of the time.
Are you still trading or have you stopped now? As there may be overlap relief that you could claim, also if you are stopping the £6k could include a payment on account that you dont need to make.
All things to be taken into consideration.

Good for you my friend!! You have bought yourself some breathing space, so well done. Picking up the phone is terrifying, so you've done a really good job there.:T0
