Returns to Ikea - 30% charge for opened goods????

Hi

Went to Belfast last night at 9.45pm - no problems. Because of stupid trading laws here if you werent thru till by midnight they couldnt complete transaction - we got thru at 11.30 and the charming assistant told me they were going to give vouchers to anyone left in queue ( very nice I thought since they started announcing at 10pm about the midnight rule)

Anyways I digress - bought a rug - sofas have been ordered but not yet arrived (from another company) Obviously I will only know the rug is perfect when I can look at entire room fully furnished and therefore have to open rug packaging. Last night I noticed they will give full refund but if package opened this is reduced by 30%.

Does anyone have experience of this? If I keep packaging and get rug back into it but with obvious open - will I get charged 30%

Thanks in advance

There is no point in negative thought, it takes up time and energy which could be used in a positive, happy way!

They seem to use their discretion on this. I know people that have bought tables, made them up, disassembled them and taken them back, and they have got a 100% refund. However, I know others that have taken back smaller items that have had the 30% deducted.

Legally, assuming the product is not faulty, they are allowed to do it.
    Gone ... or have I?

This is known as a "restocking fee", generally used by suppliers to trade to stop companies ordering things "just in case". Didn't know any retail stores did it! It is however accepted within trade, though, if I recall, it is not normally quite so hefty. Probably find that they sell opened items off and that makes up their margin.

In my experience if you return an item unopened, or faulty you will get your money back.
If its been opened they can't resell it in the store and it ends up in bargain corner, thats when you will only get 70% back.
I always make a point of going to bargain corner first, and you can haggle a bit there too!

  • Hi

I recently purchased two items in packaging and i haven't dared take them out of their packaging due to this ridiculous policy, at least not until my house has finished being decorated and other furniture has been arrived. Then i'll have to make a decision one way or the other. I have to say this has ruined my enjoyment of my purchase! I don't think they should charge at all for such returns (no other company does as far as i know). Taking on board their comments when i grilled one of their customer service staff it was because unpacked items need to be sent off to be repacked! Well both items were of similar size in clear plastic bags, one was £14 and one was £21! So what kind of packaging costs 30% of these e.g. £4.20 and £6.30 for a bit of folding and a plastic bag. I would quite happily purchase a product that had been opened and repacked as long as it looked as if someone had checked it was all ok and then resealed in say a standard package. I find this rather an immature approach to customer services! Maybe they could review it to a fixed rate of say £2-3 max, especially in light of the recession. Otherwise i rather feel they are taking the pee-pee! If enough people campaign then they may well review it!.

Power to the people!! If we keep lying down and not fighting our corner we'll just keep getting run over!!

    Cheers

I think you'll find that if you carefully take the rug out the packaging, don't like it and put it back in it will be fine. I think they only deduct 30% if you take back a half assembled chest of drawers, which is fair enough, they can't then resell it.
I don't think ikea is worse than any other shop, most offer a refund policy (which they don't have to) but if you return goods that they can't then resell they are left out of pocket.

I have took a rug back to ikea no problems.
