MANY of the 'scavenging vultures' that hide behind the title of 'Debt Collectors' do so, simply because it gives a degree of legality to the practice of extortionism, often from the most vulnerable members of society.
There are, indeed, codes of practice to which these 'thugs' should, but seldom do, adhere to whilst plying their dubious, but lucrative, trade and they certainly should not revert to actual 'criminality'.
However, since the 'psyche' of the greed driven individual that this 'activity' is, by its very nature, bound to attract, is probably incapable of recognising the difference between 'legal' and 'criminal' behaviour, it is always a good idea for anyone who is unfortunate enough to be on the recieving end of their disgusting activity to acquaint themselves with the Office of Fair Trading Guidelines for Debt Collection, which can be seen, and downloaded, on the following link.

In answer to your question, robpw2 - it certainly does seem incongruous that whilst society does not consider 'debt' as a crime, it often turns a convenient 'blind-eye' to 'criminal' behaviour in the collection of that 'debt'.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
