Not sure really, but go to your other job regardless of it having arrived or not, don't 'blot your copybook' , more than likely your 'new' supervision will know what to do. I have heard our supervision talking of 'have you got your P45?' to brand spanking new people and their reply being a shy 'no' and non of them have been dismissed on the strength of it.. I do believe it can take quite a while though and you might be placed on emergency tax code or similar situation in the meantime.... hope this helps... I hope you so enjoy your new job...how exciting !! wish it was me!!
  • I usually do a P45 for employees straight away, but I have known new employees of mine to not have been given one (by their previous employer) for 4 weeks after they've started work for me.

It doesn't hurt to chase your old employer for it, but don't worry if you haven't got it by the time you start your new job, as you can fill in a P46 instead which enables your new employer to determine what tax code to put you on for the first pay date.

There is no reason why you have not yet received your P45 but at a guess maybe it is because you left in the middle of a pay period and they will calculated anything due to you which needs to be included on it at the same time they complete all the employees salariesIf you believe that is the case then give it a few days after the normal pay day has gone...if not recieved then just write to employer and give him 7 days to forward it to you

I work in a HR department and we send P45s out at the end of the month after the payroll for that month has been finalised. This is quite common in large companies as a P45 can't be raised until your final salary payment has gone through the system. So if you left at the beginning of the month and are due to be paid from your old company next week at the end of the month for any outstanding money, I would expect your P45 to follow then.

Your new employer will understand this and be used to people not being not being able to provide their P45 the second they start. They will usually just ask you to complete a P46 form and ask you to let them have your P45 once you do receive it.

Good luck in your new job!

P45's have to be handed to people when they leave. You should therefore ring them and ask where it is.
In the absence of a P45, your new employer should give you a P46 to sign to say this is your only job. You will then be put on the basic code of 543L until your tax records can be traced and passed on.

That might be the theory, but very often the practice is not to raise them until the monthly payroll, or even the payroll after that. We had someone join us from the local council, and she rang to ask where it was and got a flea in her ear for asking: she could expect it 6-8 weeks after leaving, not a mere 4!

And if the employer doesn't offer you a P46, or looks blank when you ask for one, you can download it from the HMRC website.
