Modern politics is all about spin and pseudo-celebrity, it has nothing to do with ideology, conviction or values.
we'll never again see the likes of Robin Cook at the highest level of government, prospective candidates will be groomed more for image, and supine adherence to focus group reports, than for integrity or intelligence. It's a health benefit ...0 -

So having six lovers behind his wifes back and then leaving her for his secretary was moral then was it?
What a wonderfully principled human being.

this reminds me of an old joke.He wasn't too easy on the eye though was he?
went something like this:
tom thumb, snow white and quasimodo meet up in the forest.
'I'm the smallest guy in the world', says tom.
'I'm the most beautiful girl', says snow white.
'I'm the world's ugliest bloke', says quasi.
the fairy godmother twangs into view.
'you've all got a high opinion of yourselves', she snorts. 'there's one way we can settle this. down at the old crooked cottage hangs the magic mirror. let's be having of you and we'll have a dabble'
first up is tom thumb, while the other 2 hang around outside.
'mirror, mirror on the wall. who's the smallest of 'em all?'
'that'll be you, y'little b******.
tom comes out smiling.
'definitely me' he tells the other 2.
next up is snow white.
2 minutes later, she's out. 'definitely me', she purrs.
last up is quasi.
2 minutes later, he's out with a face like thunder.
'what's wrong quasi?' they ask.
'WHO THE **** IS ROBIN COOK!??'
an old joke, but it still makes me smile.miladdo0 -

Yep, depressing isn't it.
Last General Election was the first time I cast no meaningful vote. I went alright, but I spoilt my paper.
Shame there's no "None of the above - can we have a random decision making machine please" option... couldn't do any worse.
This time I'll be going and voting for whoever has the most chance of defeating Brown around here. Can't stand him. Two faced *******0 -
I've thanked you for this because my father does the spoilt paper thing at local/nat./euro elections, and has done for the past 10yrs.
pleased to see he's not alone.
I argued that by spoiling he's wasting a vote.(tongue in cheek a bit).
he argued back: it's purely my vote. by spoiling I make a vote. nobody can accuse me of being too lazy/indifferent for not visiting my polling station. I've made a choice that wasn't offered to me on the ballot sheet.
I've sometimes wondered if this type of approach would work in future elections. the turnout is high, but so is the no. of spoilt papers -in fact so high they outnumber the votes cast for any candidate.
I, personally, would love it.miladdo0
