Brown to increase taxes...maybe???

This is, IMHO, an excellent article from The Times...

I've never been tempted to at least write to my MP but that has just changed...

    from the article....
House prices in Britain, at six times average earnings, are too high. That's it. We all know that, we've known it for years. Property prices are nonsensical, exorbitant, unaffordable, immorally inflated by investors and a shortage of available land space to build new homes, exploited by a greedy City.

It should be noted that the earnings to price ratio is lower currently than it was in the late 80s and early 90s. Not much lower. Indeed, the ratio peaked at much the same level last year as it did before the last property crash in the early 90s.

So, there has to be some context in this. It has happened before. It will happen again. Its just part of a cycle that comes around periodically and you would expect 2 times in a typical 25 year mortgage. The reasons may be different each time but the end result is the same.... prices can go down as well as up.

as an aside, nice spelling mistake by the Times there. I thought The Times was meant to stand for quality....once upon a time.

  • dunstonh, I agree entirely with what you are saying and the market should be allowed to correct itself. What I am totally opposed to is the Government trying to stop this happening with taxpayers money. Its disgusting.
  • Call me stupid but I'm still trying to find the spelling mistake!

At least this time round they will get the money back with interest. Unlike the 90s when it was washed away trying to bolster the exchange rate.
