No apology for me - just an email two days ago, entitled Order Cancellation, saying: "In line with your recent instruction we can now confirm that the product(s) listed below has/have been cancelled and that no debit has been made against your payment card."
I know it's crazy of me as we all knew this was too good to be true, but I really object to the 'in line with your recent instruction' approach, given that I hadn't instructed them to do anything.....
Why couldn't they have just admitted their mistake....

I placed my order on 18 April, and received no communication other than a email order confirmation, with all the products and prices listed. 34 books at £4.36 including postage and packaging. If there had been a problem then surely they should have not confirmed the order ?
Only yesterday did I check the status online on the WHSmiths website to find the order cancelled. I called their customer services, and the lady I spoke to apologised and says it happens quite regularly, and that I should have received an email. I had not received an email until today, confirming what she said.
I am very disappointing and somewhat aggrieved as I had received an order confirmation and I did not abuse the order process, ordering only 1 book of each title. If this happens regularly it is most unprofessional and surely the OFT should issue at least a warning to WHSmiths.
I think that someone at WHSmiths made an error and the prices were on the website incorrectly. Thus they decided to cancel all orders so that they did not have to honour the prices. A disgrace, I certainly wont be placing any internet orders with them in the future, as in my eyes they have no integrity.0 -
I have received the following email back from the OFT off shoot Consumer Direct:
Dear Mr ________,
Thank you for your email concerning your order for 34 children's books subsequently cancelled by WH Smith. Your case number for this is WM236180, which should be quoted in any future contact about this issue.
Unfortunately WH Smith have not done anything illegal in cancelling your order when they discovered that they had made a pricing error. The relevant phrase is called 'invitation to treat' in which a trader can refuse to accept a customer's offer. But there maybe case that the company has misled it's customers regarding the pricing of these books. Therefore your complaint has been passed to Trading Standards who will assess all the relevant information and may investigate the company.
This case has been referred to Birmingham Trading Standards Service with no commitment to contact yourself.
Thank you for the information you have provided.
Regards, Terry

Please feel free to piggyback on this complaint and raise your own points with Consumer Direct or/and Trading standards. Lets not let WhSmith continually take consumers for a ride.
p.s I have called WhSmiths and informed them of this, and that a gesture of good will may persuade me that using their website is a viable proposition. Unfortunately I was promised a ring back from her supervisor yesterday; guess what, no call!0
