Help. Loads of searches on my Experian report

I have just obtained a copy of my Experian credit report and I have 47 searches since May 07! Some are as i expected, I think I went a bit overboard there! But some, like 10 from Birmingham Midshires I am not so sure about. I applied for a mortgage with them back in Oct last year which I was accepted for but never took out, and they searched me 10 times! Each search states "unknown search type". what does this mean and is it going against me, or are they similar to the type that experian do as a generic identity search ( a few of those other 37 searches are those, they aren't all for credit applications). So, based on my ridiculous amount of searches, the most recent of which is 15.4.08. how long do they remain on my credit file for lenders to see, and when would you leave it until before considering re-applying for anything? im guessing I must look pretty desperate right now to a potential lender. Which I am not I might add, just a bit trigger happy on the old application front. Any help and advice appreciated. Thanks.

I'm also curious as to the answer. I applied for a Goldfish credit card recently, and while I still haven't heard anything from them (more than 3 weeks ago) re a yes or a no, my experian credit file now has 5 searches from them on it and I also dont know what this means, or what I should do about it, if anything. Hopefully someone has more info than I!
