Locating a Company

Can't think where else to put this.
Is there a listing/directory of companies that existed twenty odd years ago - which may still exist, or has since dissolved? One that doesn't require you to know the name of the company.
I have been on the companieshouse website, but the relevant cd-rom costs £30, so was wondering if anybody knows of a cheaper alternative, as I don't really have money to spend on something that might not contain the relevant details.

You need to give more information. If you have the company number you can search for free on the Companies House website, what information do you have to do your search on? There are companies out there who can access the database for a fee and will sell you the results for less than £30 but it will depend on what you know.Don't put it down, put it away - thanks Valli
