strong lightweight suitcase

im off to thailand for a month in 3 weeks time and am after a large strong but lightweight suitcase, what should i be looking for? i assume the hard plastic ones are stronger but do they weight a lot more than canvas ones?

iwant something that will last buy not tip the scales at check in

This is hard. I've bought light suitcases before but they never make it through baggage handling without being wrecked - to be honest the damage to my last one makes me not even certain that a 'hardcase' would survive :rolleyes:

What about a large canvas type bag with wheels at one end, or a backpack (freecycle?) - certainly easier around Thailand if you're moving about a lot!

I agree with Skint Catt - the hard shelled cases don't last long with the airlines. I've had 2 smashed in the last 12 months and have now bought a soft-sided one, which looked as good after my holiday last month as it did when I set off (which is a first for me).
