Strange one- debt from a lease car

This maybe a bit of a tricky one.. so hoping someone can help
When i was 20 I had a good job and new to credit and made a right mess of things. which I'm pleased to say I have been paying through payplan and have managed to pay from 20k down to 11k I have settled a few things early by saving and working hard.
One of the things I have a real bug about is I was stupid enough to get a sport ocnvertible through Jam jar private lease cars. I paid on time every time after approx 10 months of having it I was in financial trouble and decided that measures needed to be taken to put this back on track. I called the car finanance company..Lombard vehicle management. Explained the situation and they said no problem we can collect the vehicle and you will ahve a fee to pay(approx700) it was alot but I thought for the best.
I arranged with them to pick the car up and even helped load it on the truck. Anyways a few months went by and nothing, then I got a court letter saying I had to pay lombard vehicle management over 3k plus £350.00 bayliffe charges for removing the vehicle.
Due to lack of knowledge at the time I thought that was final so have been paying £35.00 a month for along time and have paid of 1k. with still 2.5 k to pay.
I would like to try and sort this out now... but 4 years down the line. I wrote to the financial Ombudsman but they wrote back and said that lomard were not a member when the policy was taken out.
I feel I was completely duped over the phone. Why would I give the car back when I would end up paying for it anyways (or certainly a large amount) and Baliff charges. I arranged for them to pick it up.
Is there anyway I can escalate this, i.e a third party? has anyone else had similar situations.
I know I let myself down for paying it and not disputing it, was going through a difficult time - but certainly ready to take them on now.
I have asked them for a breakdown of the orignial agreement v what I owe etc....but obviously had no responce.
Any help much appreciated.
