cheapest way to get my euros back to uk

hi, any ideas on the cheapest way to transfer euros in my french bank account to my uk current account? i did ask the bank but their reply was impenetrable! i have a euro cheque book, does anyone know if its possible to just write a cheque and pay it into the uk bank? if you have done this any info would be gratefully received
