Try to get a job in a school as a teaching assistant. Sometimes unqualified people can get in. It may seem hard at first but you get all the school holidays and once your son starts school (which will come round really quickly), you will find it an absolute blessing as you will have money to look after him but also all the holidays off with him. Thats what I did when the kids were young and it was great. I still work in the school but in the office nowadays.

The only way to see if you can afford to quit/ go part time is to do a SOA based on just your OH salary and any benefits you would get. Go to www.entitledto.com to find out what you might be able to get.

Factor in selling off the 2nd car, no childcare costs, reduction in petrol (if any) to see how much of a shortfall you would have. Then look at how to cut your costs down. Food for certain can be reduced loads. Look on the Old Style Board - many are feeding a family of four on less than half your budget, so you will get loads of tips there!

Post the updated SOA here to get loads more advice!!!!
  • hi don't want to sound like i am putting a major downer on you or anything but, i was made redundant last year and it was then i happened to fall into evening and weekend work instead of working days. It is really hard work, although i love spending time with my daughter the things i didn't factor were:

being tired in the evening particually if my daughter was up early and/or had a bad day!

not getting v. much time with dh, missing out on evenings with friends etc.

eating at really odd times, and never really gettig to have a family meal round the table.

never getting to do the bedtime thing with my dd very much.

There are more things that bug me but not going to rant!! maybe these things wont bother you and they will be a small price to pay in the long run, but i just wanted to say really think about it before you do it as it may not be everything you hoped for. best of luck and i hope it all works out ok :D

You definitely hit this on the nail. This is EXACTLY how DH and I felt when I worked only in the evenings ... it did our marriage NO favours at all.

Works for some, but definitely not for us ...
