Ex - Refusing Closure of Joint Bank Account

Ex boyfriend refusing signature to close Joint bank account, and using cheque book, overdraft and cash advances to finance new relationship.

Advice Please... (His wages are now going into separate bank account with a different bank, so are mine. but bank say i am liable for £950 of Cash advanced cheques and temp overdraft over its limit.......)

Hiya - contact your bank as soon as possible and ask them to freeze the account - they should be able to stop all payments in and out of the account. Unfortunately you are jointly and severally liable for any joint debt, but at least if you get it frozen, it wont get any worse.

Once i freeze it, how do i go about closing it for good?

Basically, some agreement will have to be made to clear the debit balance, as the account can only be closed when the balance is at nil.

But not sure how you would actually force the account to be closed as I work for a bank but have never been involved in that part of the process, sorry. Someone else might know more, or you could maybe contact the CAB.

Though writing a cheque knowing there is no money to cover it is an offence of fraud. So if the ex is being uncooperative, there is always that avenue.
