Historically, people go where the work is. I believe as petrol gets more expensive people will want to be in cities. The only factor that would change this is a break through in technology (a very efficient electric car perhaps?)

Hmm....When I was a child, back in 1957, I lived on a manorial estate in the country. The 'Squire' owned a little black electric van, basically like a milk float, with seats in the back. Once a week, the housewives would climb into this 'Black Maria' and travel into town for market day.

Fifty years ago, and they had a reasonably efficient rural transport system worked out. Makes you think!

I believe, in a recession-hit Britain, cities will become less desirable places to live. However, as you've said said, people will still have to be where the jobs/houses are. Not me though!

Not entirely bad for the economy.

I agree wars aren't entirely bad for the economy. I think I was trying to show that years of air raids, rationing, military defeats and the threat of being turned into a German vassal state didn't break the British people (though it came close) so we perhaps shouldn't be getting too panicky about having to cut back a bit in a coming recession.
