Tax Rebate - can I claim loss of interest?

I have paid too much tax for the year 2007-08. I have to wait for my P60 which is due to me in May before I can send a letter to the Tax office to claim back the overpayment. Can I also claim for any loss of interest or inconvenience? It is quite a large sum they have taken this is because I am on a monthly tax code because I owed them £96 from last year!

Really annoyed with the whole thing!

Thanks

HMRC pays interest on overpayments of tax repaid more than a year after the end of the year to which the repayment relates. No interest payment will therefore be due if it is repaid before 5 April 2009.
This reinforces what I am always banging on about - which is to make sure you are on the correct code during the year as far as possible as there is no glory in having HMRC owe you money.

How do we know what the right tax code is? They were telling me I owed them money so they changed my code? I would of rather paid them £96 by cheque! Oh deary me....

Im having a similar issue. I had a staff mortgage for four months of the last tax year. For some reason work told HMRC that I had the mortgage for 12 months so they said I owed £x in tax due to the taxable benefit from the loan. My tax code was adjusted several times over the year as a result.
I rang HMRC to tell them I only had it for 4 months but they put me on emergency tax code for 2 months (one of which was bonus month ) to recoup the tax I (didnt) owe them for (not) having a taxable benefit.
This emergency tax didn't cover the full amount so they also amended my tax code for this year to reclaim the rest and now wont change it back until I can supply a p60 and p11d which is June at the earliest.

So now they owe me for overpaying tax in 2007/2008 and because they wont put my tax code back they'll owe me for 2008/2009.

No matter how much I ring them they won't sort it until I provide the two documents and in the meantime im losing interest on it all.
I feel like banging my head against a brick wall!
