Council Tax : They let us off £300???

in Cutting tax
We have been renting a property since end of december 2007, and didnt pay council tax till april, which ment we owed around £400, from january to march is what we owed money for, which we got a summons for. at the time i only had £100 to pay so the council tax lady said pay off april and do the past three months when we can afford it.
Now my boyfriend just rang to pay the outstanding £300 and the woman said it had all been cancled, that we will be issued a new bill from may to february costing £1100, this is very strange.
My boyfriend is over the moon, but im more like hang on, the council dont just do that.
Any thoughts????

I would be asking for that confirmation in writing.0

sounds to me like they have amalgamated the 2007/8 charge and 2008/9 charge into one bill. not written off i can assure you!!!it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!! :rolleyes:0

I would age with hodgester that it's probably been rolled in to the 08/09 charge but I would still check. We roll over un-summonsed balances but if the balance was summonsed then it wouldn't be rolled over , it would be treated as a separate so as not to lose recovery action.
Its unlikely to have been written off , we would generally only do so where a person is un-traceable and even then it would be written back on if the person re-appeared.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
i agree with cis in all the time i worked for council tax recovery department. they never wrote any debts off.
as cis states only if they can't find the people to pay or if it ends up in court (which is last resort) and the magistrate decides to write it off(that is very rare as well)0 -
A few of my colleagues tend to do write off's but I hate the idea - I'd rather let the money lie on file as long as it has to - I think it was mentioned that we had only written off a few thousand pounds in the 06/7 yrI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. She gave us a new accountnumber for the new bill, deleted the old bills.
If it is put onto next years then thats fine, easier than paying £300 off in one go.

was the new account number for your new address as for every address there will be a new account number.
to work out what you have been charged.
find out your yearly charge for property, divide the amount by the days in the year eg 365 then multiply that by the amount of days you have lived at property.0
