My Mum hired the junior from our hairdressers (she was only about 17 so needed the cash) and she came round with a load of make up and hair curling tongs, and "made over" me and 4 friends. This was when i was 12.

We all brought our smartest outfits/dresses, and then my Dad and Mum took photos of us all. He got them developed (no digital back then!) and gave them to all the girls who had come the next day. Mum lent us her necklaces and jewellery for the photos and it was really fun!

EDIT sorry I hadn't read the bit that says she isn't girly! We also did a trip to the local dry ski slope one year with a couple of friends, we had a one hour lesson then went for a hot chocolate afterwards!

Cadbury World is quite good, although it can be a tad expensive for adults. I went there the other week with my OH (I am 46 and he is 41 btw) and the best bit for me was when I had to be a cocoa bean being shaken through various bits of machinery (basically the benches shook violently whilst we were watching a short film). In the packaging plant there are various computer points that you can use and they will ask questions about their various products (never could get 100% no matter how hard I tried).

Its great fun, and you do get some free samples. There is an outdoor play area for kids.

Hope you find something for DD to do on her birthday.
  • I'm sure the party has already happened by now. I hope it went well but thought I might add my idea. How about scuba diving? You might be able to do a one off session at a local pool. Googling should bring up some details. For an introverted or outgoing child it would probably be an exciting experience and might inspire a new hobby. Also there's no need to worry about friends or feeling left out.
