just thought Id ad that!
If you've got a BT Home Hub, I'd be very cautious of connecting anything to it - especially power. It's less secure that a wallet in the wind.0 -
you can also connect a printer to it.
A system is only as secure as the person operating it.
Yes the HH is a crap piece of hardware, but so are alot of alternatives.0 -
Yes Seth, the drive is the one on the play.com link.
I'm glad to have stimulated such discussion (!)
Just to reiterate - this is a NETWORK drive, not simply a USB drive.
That is exactly why I was pleased with the price. The play.com price of £99.99 is the lowest I could find online for this bit of kit.0 -

Thanks; wonder if PCW would do their 10% off price match

Yes, PC World would have done the price match. Only problem was lack of stock at PC World within 50 miles of me.
Not sure if the Staples price of £79.99 is national by the way!0 -

Which branch did you find these in?
I saw this for £149 for the 1TB myBook (NAS)

It is also has gigabit support useful for video.
I'd love to know the power consumption for these units Vs the smaller network NAS as the cost of running these units is significant for 24x7
Do any have a cron job so you can set boot times / shutdowns etc
What is the shutdown process, I assumed they'd run a journal FS but noticed they are FAT32 / HFS.Seth.0 -
I got this in the Oxford store.
Not sure how to measure the power consumption, please let me know how and I will post the results.0 -
The Western Digital My Book World Edition 1Gb, containing a single drive measures 11Watts using my energy meter. Note that another version (mark II?) with two drives is also available, this might contain more power.
It is possible to install a bittorrent server (transmission) on this NAS drive, which is then accessible from a web application (clutch) - see
http://en.dogeno.us/2008/03/install-transmission-using-ipkg-built-packages-in-the-mybook-world-nas/
Finally, although it claims Gigabit support, apparantly the processor isn't fast enough to support this - but no equivalently priced drives are either.
Hope this is useful!0
