Associations on CRF's

Hi Everyone, Firstly I would like to thank everyone on this forum for all of the help and support given over the last 18 months. Although I have only registered today, I read this forum everyday as I find it supports even now the feelings I have before, during and after my bankruptcy. I found myself having to take the bankuptcy route due to ill health in November 2006 and was discharged in September 2007. Without you guys I would never have got through those days. I am bed bound and reading through the forum felt that I should be doing something about cleaning up my CRF's. Today I found the courage to find my report, firstly it is in just a dreadful mess, with nothing being right on it. But my main concern is that at the top is states that in 2004 my husband was an associate of mine in respect of a loan I took out. At the bottom of the report is clearly shows that two companies have done credit reports on my O/H but it states my report is not available to them. I do not understand therefore if my credit report is not available to those checking my O/H's credit rating, why are the credit checks being shown and should my husband be on my credit reference files as an assocate. Many thanks for your help, sorry so long. and thanks again for everything. Hope this has gone into right thread. x

  • Hi Dalip, Thank you for your kind words. I did not realise what a difficult thing cleaning up the CRF;s can be. Whether I can do it, remains to be seen, but will give it a try. If I decide not to do it and wait until my 6 years is completed, will it have any affect at all after that time. This forum and the people in it has certainly given me my strength.

On Experian, a search due to an associate should look something like this:

    2mfxff5.jpg

When it says "It will not be seen by lenders" it means that the search entry can only be seen by you, so any of your lenders who search your report won't see it. It's there for your info only.

    Is that similar to yours?

  • Hi Fermi, Yes it looks just like that. but does this mean that when anyone does a credit check on my O/H, that they are able to look at my credit file as he has been listed as an associate. Financially we have never had anything joint together. Many thanks for your help. :o

If you disagree with the "association" then you need to contact Experian or the lender who created it depending on the circumstances.

If the association no longer exists, then Experian may remove it. If it has been created in error, then you may need to go through the creditor who made it.

    From Experian:
    Associations

A record of an association shows a financial link you have with someone. These links are created by joint judgments, joint accounts and joint credit applications, or from information you gave to us or lenders. Associations are not created between business partners.

The information you see will include the details of the person you are financially
connected to (the associate), the name of the organisation which created the link, and the date the link was created.

Lenders may also see the financial information relating to the associate. This allows
lenders to view all the information that may be relevant to your credit application.
Information about an association is held on record indefinitely. The financial information about any associates is not recorded on your credit report. If your associate needs to see their credit report, they will need to apply separately. Lenders can take account of your associate’s financial information when deciding whether to give you credit.

Here is an example of an association on a credit report.

    L1
MR JOHN SMITH, 15, HIGH STREET, ANYTOWN, FR3 8JU
Associated wih MRS ANNE SMITH Date of birth 29/04/58
    Association type JOINT ACCOUNT
Association created by ABC BANK date 23/05/02

I am no longer linked to the person my report says I am associated with – what should I do?

Contact us and explain the situation. We may ask you for further information but, if you are no longer associated, we will be able to break the link between you. See page 25 for details of how to get in touch.

I disagree with an association recorded – what should I do?

The quickest way to get information corrected is to contact the source of that
information. If the information was provided by a lender, contact them first. A list of
useful addresses is given at the back of your credit report.

Why doesn’t my associate’s financial information appear on my report?

We provide your credit report under Section 7 of the Data Protection Act 1998. Underthis law, we must give you any information we hold about you and only you. However, itis worth asking your associate to get their report so you can check all the information a lender may have used to make a decision about giving you credit.

  • Hi Fermi, Thank you so much for that so in a way my O/H's credit rating would be affected by being an associate of me. All this time down the line and you start to find out the aftermath of bankruptcy, not only for yourself but for others. I have no idea why the association was marked up. Would not have known but noticed that my OH's bank has done a credit ref check on him but for no reason. ????? and hello Feeling Low, good to be part of this forum that has helped me so much. Many thanks.

I have no idea why the association was marked up. if its anything like I was it ended up there by accident, they had me marked down as a link with a credit card my OH had & i'd never applied for the thing..although a letter to the credit agencies soon sorted it easily Would not have known but noticed that my OH's bank has done a credit ref check on him but for no reason. ????? and hello Feeling Low, good to be part of this forum that has helped me so much. • Thanks for the info. Clerk to the court told my O/H that my bankruptcy would have no relationship to his credit rating/finances at all ................wrong.....
Will write letter to creditor concerned to see if it can be removed. Feels a little unjust especially as O/H is my main carer and was not his fault I am poorly and I had to take this route. But thats life Cheers everyone. x
