Bicarb of soda in food?

Baking powder =bicarbonate of soda +cream of tartar.
The bicarb is an acid and the cream of tartar is an alkali. When they are mixed together and get wet (in cake mix or with water or whatever) they react together. The reaction will make little bubbles and this will cause a cake etc. to rise. If they are just the dry powders they won't react. You need 1 part bicarb to every 2 parts of cream of tartar to make standard baking powder.0 -
I've also bought bicarb in a big tub from my chemist for cleaning; this isn't marked for cooking so make sure you get the one from the cooking section (presumably there are different 'grades'
)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
