Tax Rebate Help Needed Please

Morning all, Got my P60 and just rung the Inland revenue to ask about a rebate as I have been paying tax code 522 L M1 since October.
The tax office did say I was paying too much tax and there would be a rebate.
As I hadn't sent in the right P45 (Long story),last year, they said they would sort it all out with the P60.

Normally if I am due any money back, then I have either got it back in my wage or by cheque.
The girl today, told me I had to send in the original P60 and they would look at it for me to decide if I'm allowed a refund.
I have never done this before, and am a bit puzzled.

How long does this normally take to review.
xx

It depends on how much post your tax office has on hand. I would normally say 4 weeks, but I understand that some tax offices have 8 or more weeks post on hand.
Lesson learnt, I hope - get on the right code during the year so you are not at the mercy of HMRC and its lack of staff.

The 07/08 tax year has ended so you can't get the refund in your pay because it's too late to adjust your tax code for that year. That's why HMRC have asked for your P60.

If you don't send in your P60 then you will still probably get a cheque paid to you by HMRC but you would be waiting for them to get to your name which will be one of thousands on PAYE worklists. So it could be a few months. By sending your P60 in to your tax office you are effectivley pushing yourself to the top of the queue.

They probably haven't opened the letter yet!

Expect a minimum 2 months ... and probably longer at this time of the year. I applied for a very specific refund in January (quietish time for PAYE) - and it took just a little over 2 months. And that from an office allegedly more up to date than most.
