Need new TV - Plasma or LCD? Help!!!!

I've looked at reviews for both but I'm now totally confused as different sites recommend either one or the other, there doesn't seem to be an overall winner!

I'm looking for a 42", can anyone recommend one & is it worth taking out the extended guarantee that most shops offer?

Thanks!

Please not the old LCD/Plasma arguments. with both claiming one or the other is better. Just view for youself, and make your own mind up.

Thanks for your help - not !

I simply posted in case any current 42" plasma/lcd tv owners could give their recommendations or ones to avoid - won't bother in future!!

for 42" and above the gadget show recommends plasma, but as roddydogs say have a look yourself, personally it's plasma every time for me.

if you can, buy the TV from john lewis, they give a free warranty with every TV , they also price match as well.

have a look at reviews for the Panasonic th42px80, its part of there new 08 range and getting very good reviews indeed, i have the th42px60 (06 range) and cant fault it.

have a look at http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php but be prepared to get a very sore head lol.

  • Thanks Kev,

I've been onto the website you recommended as well as loads of others & I think I'd confused myself with all the info!

I had in fact been looking at the Panasonic th42px80 so it's great to hear from someone that has actually bought a similar one & can recommend them, I just need to have a look around to see if I can find one any cheaper than £899 before I order from John Lewis.
  • Hi there op,

We have just ordered the tv you are looking at (when I say just I mean it has not been delivered yet :rotfl: ) We went into the JL store to see in "in the flesh" and then ordered online through JL.

Now I guess it depends how important a 5 year warrenty is to you... Dixons have it on at £719 and somewhere else that I had never heard of had it for a shade under £700. However with both of these companies you had to pay extra for the warrenty which then made it more expensive than JL. Sorry that was a bit long winded.... Google the model number and the retailers that stock it will come up.

For both Dixons and JL you can get cashback through quidco (for JL it was just under £27 - better than nothing...)

lol you don't know how long DH has been wishing our crt would go wonky!!!

With much experience in this field working with Monitors/LCD TVs at work. I have always had the least of issues with Samsung. Although they are generally not the cheapest, by far the best quality in my experience.

LG have also proved pretty good. Support was OK for a few faulty models we had.

LCD won't get screen-burn, so you hook up your PC or games console without worrying about ghost images being burned into the screen.

Screen-burn could also be a potential problem if you were to watch TV channels that have their logo in the upper corners for long periods.

I think he's suggesting that there is no clear winner and you'll end with a big debate and no clear answer.

I've never bothered doing much research into "chav screens", but understand that plasma isn't too clever in many ways including expected life and power consumption.

No you dont pay the 899. Email John Lewis and say you have seen the TV at Sound and Vision Bolton for around 700. They'll then contact you within a week and say they will match that price. You pay the 700 and get a 5yr warranty free. Simple.

Maybe true about 7 or 8 years ago. But it's outdated thinking. Current plasmas have a long lifespan (e.g. Panasonic Vieras are 100,000 hours) which isn't any less than LCD. As for power consumption, in general for average use some plasmas use a bit more but then you can actually find LCDs that use more power than plasma per viewing inch. Also someone mentioned earlier about screen burn, the screen burn in current plasmas is actually better than the screen burn susceptibility in CRTs.
