Is it normal for a sunflower to grow more than one head? My son has grown one down his dad's allotment and it has 12 heads on it.

I had heard loads about this miraculous flower and wasn't believing a word of it until XDH took a picture of it on his phone, XDH is 6'4" and he is stood next to this sunflower with his arm stretched up and the sunflower is at least 3 foot taller than the tips of his fingers, it's huge and they've only fed it with two shots of Miracle Gro.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

One of our sunflowers has 2 big heads the other 4 smaller ones. They are about 6.6 in tall.

I think it depends on the variety.

Last week when I went to work with OH we went on a mini-adventure to have a look at the sorts of houses for sale in the area. As we drove from Orrell towards Skelmsersdale (north of the M58) there was this two-storey house which had about 6 giant sunflowers upto the weatherboard on the gabel end  I did a double take because I couldn't believe my eyes!

  • Hi, glad to see this post as my OH thought that I was just plain dumb as I asked him how to get the seeds out of the dying sunflowers for next year. Me and kids have really enjoyed growing them and we just love sunflowers and looking forward to growing some different varieties next year.
