Hi,
My husband has just taken early retirement, he will be 62 this May, as you know he will not be getting his state pension until he is 65, can anyone tell us if he should still pay his NI contributions towards his state pension? or has he paid enough, he has never been unemployed or claimed any benefits and has worked from age 16.
Many thanks

No, there will be no benefit in him paying voluntary NI contributions... anyone retiring after april 2010 only needs 30 years contributions which he presumably has in plenty.0

does this mean if you have paid 30 years contributions but carry on working that you can stop paying national insurance and if so how do you go about it?0

thank you very much0

john, no, if you are working and earning enough to pay NI you have to pay it; but it qualifies you for other things than pension, such as Incapacity Benefit if you were ever unable to work through illness. (Other Benefits too).(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Under the old system he would have got free credits from 60-65 anyway.0
