Continuing to pay NI Pension contributions

I recently went part time and was worried that it may affect my pension. I rang for a pension forecast and was told that, under the new guidelines, I had 31 years payments made and therefore qualified for a full pension when the time comes. I was told that I did not need to pay any more and could ask my payroll people to cease making NI payments on my behalf.

Question???? My OH is still working and paying a lot of NI contributions yet he also has over 31 years payments to his name and so presumably qulifies for a full pension already. Could he, whilst still working full time opt out? What would the implications be?
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend

No. It only applies where voluntary contributions would be needed, ie the person is not working or has very low earnings.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
  • The NI contribution qualifies you for other things than State Pension, so although as Edinvestor says your husband cannot opt out of paying them, they will qualify him for certain Benefits such as Incapacity Benefit if he is unable to work through sickness.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
