Claiming mileage charge over 40p per mile

Or you are self employed?0

They could claim tax on the 20p a mile whether they were employed or not. It has to be your own bike though, if you were to use a bike provided by your employer then you can't.
It'd be worth 4p a mile in tax relief if they used their own bike, I'm not sure really how much this is worth but as bicycle journeys are always going to be a lot shorter then the amount reclaimable must be relatively small.0 -
48 pence an hour at 12 MPH.
Now an electric bike could double than?
Anyone a cycle courier?0 -
Just wondered if this still sat at £0.40 and £0.25 (first 10k miles and thereafter)?
Earlier comments by mitchaa certainly made me laugh and although £0.40 does initially sound very nice as many have pointed out it's also to cover tax, insurance, wear and tear, servcing, mot, tyres, yada yada yada. My tyres alone cost £260 EACH and need replacing once a year
I was hoping that something would give and we'd be allowed a little increase per mile what with VAT going back up this year.Confused!0 -

What did you do when VAT went down to 15%, ?
Did you claim a little less to offset the benefits from paying less VAT.
If VAT had increased over the 17.50 % then you might have had a fair point, but seeing as it has only gone back upto a previous existing level, on the VAT front, percentage wise you are no worse off than you were 2 years ago. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Some people seem to think that self employed vehicle users are being given 40p by the government for every mile they travel, which is entirely incorrect. The business allowance on 12,000 miles equate to £4,500 offset against business profits. With a tax rate of 20% that equates £900.00 in tax relief.
I am self employed and run a van with 100% business only usage -
Here is last years costs:-
Fuel - £2,400.00( of which +60% is government duty), Insurance £550.00, Servicing/ Repairs/ MOT - £640.00, Finance on vehicle- £2160.00
The total for the year(not including the finance) is £3590.00, which against £900.00 is a disgrace in my opinion.0 -
Not sure what your point is, you are arguing that the State should fund the motor expenses of the self employed?I am an Accountant. Anyone who is interested in the thread will probably be interested to learn that as of 6th April 2011 HMRC have increased the Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) from 40p per mile up to 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles done in a car or van.
You can read about it on HMRC website.
As a new user I can't post direct links to the pages but just go to HMRC's website and search for:
Approved Mileage Allowance Payments
and click on the link to the page named:
Mileage expenses for business travel in employees' own vehicles
Hope that helps people out.0 -
