Hmmm,From Incapacity Benefit back to work - help!

Hi all
I have been off work since Christmas with depression.
My employer terminated my contract on medical incapability grounds.
I have been claiming Incapacity Benefit and Housing and Council tax benefit.
I am starting to get better now and will eventually want to get back into work. Obviously potential employers are going to want to know why I have been off and why my last job was terminated. I don't want to lie (even if I did thje truth would emerge when they approach my last employer for a reference) but is there a way to explain why I have been off without frightening potential emplyers away?? Or should I be completely honest and just hope that someone will see past the depression? I am on medication for it now and it seems to be working. Someone suggested I should declare it as a disability. Has anyone got any ideas? I'd also like to hear about people's experiences getting back to work after being off with depression/anxiety. Sometimes I get the feeling that no-one would be willing to employ me ever again.

My best mate, brilliantly clever, suffered from manic depression in her last year at Uni, and left with an unclassified degree (having been predicted a 1st).
She was in and out of hospital, sectioned, suicide attempts, the lot.
She's a teacher now, with special disclosure rules, and has had no difficulties doing her training and getting her two jobs so far....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
