How to clean sooty marks from outside window ledges?

I live in an old coal mining area where some houses still use coal fires. The problem is that the soot particles float about and stain the upvc window ledges. I've tried all sorts of cleaning products, but there's probable an old fashioned method that will work as none of the modern stuff has.

Any Kim & Aggie's out there?

just asked OH (who is a window cleaner) and he pulled a face - you know, a bit like a mechanic might do when they're going to tell you your big end has gone! sorry!

he said upvc frames can get stained but you could try a specific upvc cream cleaner.

    Have you tried Barkeeper's Friend?

  • Is that available to buy in shops? I have a similar problem with my hearth and think it might be worth trying some.

I've heard good things about barkeepers friend (though I've never tried it myself). I know Lakeland sell it but I'm sure i've seen it in supermarkets too.

Thanks for the recommendations. Your description of OH's face brought a smile to my face, wonderful.

Barkeepers Friend can be found in most supermarkets. I buy it from my local Asda. I use it a lot and where all else fails I find it often works. Apparently it was used to clean the Albert Memorial in london.
