Anyone help with dd's homework please...

Ok this is the first part:

lisa went on holiday and she made 80 sandcastles in 5 days.
Each day she made 4 fewer castles the day before..how many castles did she make each day?

I make it day
day 1=24
day 2=20
day 3=16
day 4=12
day 5=8
=80

Then the next bit is Lisa went on making 4 fewer castles each day how many did she make altogether?

Is it 80 as in the start or 80-4-8-12-16-20=60
so 80-60=20 sandcastles

Confused! I never was any good at maths!

I make it 84 sandcastles

Day 6 = 4 sandcastles
Day 7 = 0 sandcastles

She'd already made 80, so 80 + 4 = 84.

If she went on making 4 fewer each day then:

Day 6 = 4 castles
Day 7 = 0 castles

So she made 84 altogether. (I think)

Thanks guys i asked someone else and they said either 80 if she was on holiday for the 5 days of that answer you gave if longer..i'm going by the 5 days though ans it doesn't say she was away longer?? ahh what hope has dd got if i can't even do it!

I don't think saying 80 is going to be right.

It doesn't say she was only on holiday for 5 days either, so why assume that. It says she continued to build 4 less a day so she must have been there longer

If you have put down word for word, then she isn't on holiday for 5 days. It does not say she is - it only says she makes 80 castles in 5 days without mentioning the length of her holiday.

The next clue is that it tells you that she continues to make 4 less each day, so don't go for 5 days as her length of holiday, because its not right!

I have discovered over the years that its not just the maths thats important, its doing the right question which you have to work out as well!

Thankyou yes you are right it is 84 i can se the logic now! the trouble with me is that i think far too deep into things and confuse matters! after all this is for a child so it can't be that hard!!
