How to publish a childrens book?

Ok hubby has had these characters that he made up a few years ago, has the illustarations and short stories, kind of a series of books. They are only down on paper right now what would be the next step to producing a book?

Firstly, protect the characters by trademarking them... not sure of the exact process here, but these are his intellectual property and therefore the core of the business.

However once you have a book, you will need an agent as many publishers do not read unsolicited manuscripts... I have no idea how to get but some writers use mentoring-type services who advise, proofread and *may* recommend you to one... Some of these people and agents must be rubbish/crooked so be careful... You are best hanging round a literary forum for a bit to get the full picture - that's just my very basic knowledge of the writing business - I am no expert!

The other route is self-publication but this could be long, hard and unprofitable.

The children's book market is a tough one supposedly, so good luck!

I don't have any personal experience on this, so I can't really advise .... but someone else I know through another board is self-publishing her own adult fiction book through http://www.lulu.com/uk/.

They have publishing forums too, so it might be worth a look to pick up some info, tips etc.?

    Good luck!
