The beef curry is very very nice... thanks again to Stephen for that! :T I only wish I had remembered how chapped my lips were BEFORE I decided to double up on the chilli  :o

Oh, you poor thing. Come here. Let me kiss them better. (You begin to see how this works, Phil? )

I am still working on the vegetable version - I spent far too much time on here this afternoon instead of doing the weekly shopping in ASDA. It will be based on the beef one but you can't just swap the meat for a load of veg'. I want to keep the basics right, but also be flexible with the vegetables you can use.

    Hey Stephen,

Just wondering if you'd had any luck with the vegetable curry yet?

I want to cook a curry, something mild as DH or little un's haven't ever tried curry and I've never cooked one. I really like the sound of your mushroom one but as I'm the only one who likes mushrooms didn't think it would be a good intro to curry for them! :rotfl:
  • Well I've got two veg curry recipes which me and my bf ate alot when we were students..no idea if they are under 65p or not but they are cheap (we used to live off £12 a week between us for food, although we always had money to go out drinking lol)

    Peanut butter curry x4

    2 tsp oil
2-3 garlic cloves (or powder is fine too)
    1 cup chopped onions
1 tsp curry powder (we used medium and it wsnt very spicy so adjust it to what you like)
frozen mixed veg (or fresh, enough for how ever many people you're feeding)
    salt and pepper
    1/2 cup choppped tomatoes
    1/2 cup peanut butter

    1. Fry onions and garlic until tender, stir in curry powder and cook for 1minute

    2. Cook veg in seperate pan (if you have veg thats needs to be cooked longer then start it before the rest..)

    3. Stir in tomatoes and peanut butter to the onions and garlic and cook till warm, add veg in and stir.

Kinda simple, just be careful how much pb you add because it can be quite thick, i guess if you added to much then you could add some water or more tomatoes.

I've also got a normal veg curry recipe.

    Veg curry x1

    1 small onion
    2 cups veg, fresh/frozen
    1-2tsp curry powder
    1/2 tsp paprika
    1 tsp tom puree/ketchup
    1tsp apricot jam
    1/2tsp lemon juice
    150ml milk
    1tbsp sultanas (optional)
    1 egg

    1. cook veg

2 fry onion until soft then add curry powder and paprika for a few mins.

    3. Add puree, jam, lemon juice, milk and sultanas

    4. bring to boil and simmer for 10 mins

    5. hard boil egg, add veg to sauce and cook for 5 mins

    6. slice egg and arrange on top.

While they're not the best currys in the world obviously, they are cheap and we loved them (until we had them every week for two years virtually, now we dont eat them at all lol)

Sorry. I've been uncharacteristically down and demotivated of late - a double dose of post holiday blues - coming back from a fun-packed week on the Dorset coast and then the end of the school holidays - plus having to put sorting out the financial side of the separation and divorce on hold yet again due to the housing market - then the 10p tax kick in the teeth.

OTOH, it's heartening to know that my humble efforts have been missed! I may not have someone to cook for, but I can share my food with all of you. Now, how many cooks can say that?

My immediate thoughts on the veg' curry are to keep it simple and in line with my other curry recipes and ingredients by swapping the 250g of mushrooms for roughly equal quantities of diced potato and cauliflower. Maybe 150g each? Fresh cauliflower nice, but frozen florets OK. Possible additions of carrot, peas, beans and/or basically any other veg' you fancy or have skulking in the fridge or freezer.

PS. There's a link in Martin's supermarket shopping article to a site where a food writer actually tastes and rates various own brand foods, and tinned veg' curries come out as rather good, although the salt contents are usually "amber". Mind you, mine's got 1/4 of a teaspoon per person, but at least you have the option of omitting this.

Sorry you're having a such a naff time hun (((hug))). Hope things get sorted out for you very soon.

I'm glad you had a lovely fun-packed time in Dorset, it's beautiful part of our country.

Thank you for your advice on switching the mushrooms for potato and cauli. I'll try that and let you know how it goes. I'll also check out the supermarket shopping article.

    Thanks again :A
