Can you beat 65p veg curry and rice?

Options
For a tin of asda smart price veg curry and a packet of smart price veg rice it comes to 65p. I don't think you could make it for less than that yourself.

Yes, that's all very well, but OS and Moneysaving isn't JUST about being the cheapest, there has, in most cases got to be some element of palatability! I don't suppose hm basic veg curry would cost very much more, but would be so much nicer to eat. If you can use whoopsie veg then that should keep the price down.

I tend to batch make different types of veg curry, dependent on what I have in, last week mushrooms were the base. This week I wanted to liven the nutloaf, so got a cauliflower/tomato/chickpea mix from the freezer, but it's nice on top of some rice.

I don't see that anywhere in the site's charter?:confused:

Hi Bellaquidsin, I'd best not hijack studentphil's thread, but I've been blogging at length about my 3 month feed 2 people for £40 per month with recipes challenge here, if you'd like to peruse my thrifty ways! ;)

  • Sainsbury's jar of basic curry sauce is 6p and surprisingly quite tasty, I add a handful of red lentils, about 8ps worth, to this and a tin of basic plum tomatoes, which is 19p. Once the lentils are cooked I add a tin of chickpeas for 40p, although this is over your 65p this curry is enough for 2 people and the leftovers I liquidise and freeze to use as a sauce for fish or leftover chicken. I would serve with Basmati Rice, but Basic long grain rice works out at 4.3p per 100g. I reckon that's not bad going and quite nutritious.
  • Depends on how many portions, it works out more economical to batch cook and make more portions than buying and making something in smaller quantities.

i have made 7 portions of veg curry for under 2 pounds today (for the freezer) and rice costs very little per portion so i reckon i have beaten asda!! also done 7 portions of veg chilli and a large pan of soup (6 pounds in total for the lot)!!
