PS3 or Blu-Ray?

Hi, now that blu-ray have won the HD war over HD-DVD, is it worth buying the PS3? Is the blu-ray player in the PS3 any good, and does anyone know where the best deals onthe PS3 are? Or should I buy a stand alone blu-ray player?

I don't think the Blu Ray player on the PS3 is the best but it's definitely the best value for money even excluding the gaming aspect. Although I think that price difference is closing fast. In fact I'm not completely sure Sony are still making a loss on the PS3s.

Does anyone else have a comment on the quality of the BD drive in the PS3? Before I take the plunge and buy one!

Noticed that PC World is selling an internal blu-ray drive for the PC for £199, which seems good value as it writes to BD disk as well.

  • I know a couple of people on avforums and avsforums who like the quality of the PS3. The other advantage of the PS3 over the standalones is that the software is updatable. Be careful of the standalone blue ray drives. They might not be upgradable to the latest BR formats.

I have PS3..no complaints on the BR quality. IF you are planning on buying PS3 for movies, get the remote as its a bit easier than using the controlpad. You might be able to get a PS3 as part of a mobile phone contract. I bought mine using a combo of quidco+currys discounts.

Was thinking about that just today (about PS3 being updatable) that gives it a large advantage over the "normal" blu ray players that you'd be lucky to get one or two firmware updates. So with the PS3 the blu ray player is actually improving during its' lifetime. In fact the latest big firmware update was released today and that brought full HD DTS master audio quality to blu ray playback. http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/04/16/playstation_firmware/

:rotfl: that has to be the strangest reason not to buy a PS3. If you shop intelligently, you won't spend more than £30 on a game. You might not always have the latest gamest but if you are patient enough and can wait for 1-2 months, you can get all games for £30 or less. It is a matter of watching the right boards and forums.

I don't particuarly want this thread to degenerate into a 360 vs PS3 given that the original question was about Blu-ray. Having had both consoles, my comments on the 360 are:

    - They are far noisier (at least the earlier ones were)
    - They are a lot uglier than the PS3 so the WAF is higher on the PS3
    - Reliability issues abound. Of the 20 or so guys I knew from my office that had one, more than half have had the ring of death

Ouch! Just had the red ring of death on my xbox 360! Out of warranty by two weeks from Game! But it has been repaired free, that's the second time a 360 unit has failed just over a year.

Think I will wait a bit for two things:
The price of the PS3 to drop?
Blu-Ray discs to reach a critical mass of store shelf space and start to drop in price..

lol, i knew it would turn into 360 v ps3...we`ve also had both and i would NEVER get another 360!!! Everyone that we knew with a 360 (including us) had the ring of death, ps3-no problems at all!!! Yes the ps3 games are a little more expensive but like someone has already said if you wait you can get them cheaper or buy preowned or even better make friends with a manager of a games shop and use their dicount ;-)

We have 2 ps3`s now, one upstairs and one down and i would definatly recommend it over a stand alone blu-ray player player, you have the added bonus of being able to play games on it, the quality is great and when ps3 home comes out OMG!!!

Do it!! Have a look in the games shops for preowned if you want to get it a little cheaper but if you can get the 60gb (4 usb`s, backwards compatability and card reader).

    Have fun!!!
