tesco's new meat policy

yesterday I was in my local tesco which has a fresh meat counter .I wanted to buy my DD some mince and some braising steak that she wanted. When I asked for some the butcher said that they were out of it as tesco's wanted to run down on stocks and were packeging as much of their meat as possible to make more money as pre-packed meat could be sold at a higher price .He said that because people have slowed down on buying it was easier to get people to buy pre-packed stuff rather than loose fresh meat .
it seems that if you rush around the store ,rather that queue up at the counter to buy fresh cut meat you will throw packed meat into your trolly and not look so closely at the prices
Another little scam for Mr T to grab your cash. I came out and went to a proper butchers where I bought what I wanted fresh cut
I have noticed over the past few weeks that tesco's have seemed to keep quite low stocks of various stuff if they have other stuff they want to sell off (usually dearer priced stuff)
It's another case of hiking up the cost of living . I have become so alert at looking for this my shopping bill has dropped a bit as I now think twice before I buy something .It's a case of do I really need it and if not then I just don't get it .

We buy meat from our butcher who also happens to be a mate. We are very lucky as his meat is top class Scotch beef, free range chicken, pork and so forth and he is kind enough to give us 'mates rates'. We haven't bought supermarket meat for abotu 2 years now and would NEVER go back even if we had to pay top whack. We eke out a pound of mince (for 2 adults) for 3/4 meals and bulk out with fresh veg etc. Tesco's are annoying for doing this though, especially as they trumpet themselves for 'Every little helps' etc but TBH i think consumers only have themselves to blame. Very often the meat on the counters is in the reduction bin as it hardly sells, people seem to more inclined to buy plastic packaged meat which is a shame. But if you can notice these tricks that the Supermarkets pull then we can keep one step ahead!!!

Away from your subject of meat, jackieO, but germane(I agree with your comments).
The disappearance of a number of Value lines in Mr T is very noticeable now, especially in fruit and veg. I've mentioned this to certain 'customer-friendly' staff and they say it's deliberate and profit-driven. Leeks, peppers, onions, carrots, oranges have all been subject to this sporadically in the last 3-6 months. For leeks and peppers(staples for me)it's permanent. I buy top quality/luxury meat when it's being massively reduced - Wed/Thurs evenings are particularly good. The freezer's full. Beware, too, their Wholefoods repackaging - ordinary pulses, grains etc. still available in other aisles, are double, treble the standard prices for identical quality and content. This is true with brown rice: 500gms wholefoods 89p was sitting alongside 1kg identical, NOT marked Wholefoods. Price? 88p. Check also sunflower seeds and other bread ingredients per 100gms.

And why is it in Tesco that if you buy a bigger jar/packet/tin of something, it actually costs more?? Not on every item of course but there are a great many. Surely if you buy a bigger package of something it's usually a bit cheaper. Not (always) in Tesco it isn't!!!

I was looking at dried figs in Tesco. The ordinary pack was 89p, the organic pack was nearly £3. Fair enough I thought, and bought the ordinary ones.

Later that week I was in Asda. Their organic figs, in the same size packet were £1.29. Bit of a difference, so I'm inclined to agree with you that Tesco are not very customer friendly just now.

As far as meat goes, I try to buy organic now, or from a good butcher that we have to travel a little way to, but it's worth it.

Yes, my local branch of Tesco did away with the fresh meat and fresh fish counter a few years ago. Annoying as I like to buy single portions of fresh meat and fish. Fortunately there's a super fresh fish van parked right outside the shop, doing a roaring trade! And Mr S's supermarket up the road is still offering fresh fish and meat counters...
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...

I think the messege I am getting here is DONT shop at tesco...I only ever go in for offers on non food goods;) . I am lucky that I can choose between tesco , aldi ,lidl , sainsburys, morrisons, co-op, netto and asda (all within 2 -3 miles) but I buy all my fresh fruit and veg and meat from the market:D . Its a pitty not everyone has so much choice, but I do feel tesco are the worst of a bad bunch. So if you do have a choice go elsewhere:money:

Here, it's a choice of Tesco or Waitrose - and Tesco are still cheaper than Waitrose! But they're dearer here than where my sisters live (where there's competition from loads of other supermarkets). No fresh meat either - just pre-packed. Oh for some real choice...

I live in a rural market town and was pleasantly surprised to find out last week that Sainsburys now deliver here. If you haven't checked your postcode lately it might be worth another look. If we order goods to the value of £70 or more, delivery is only £2.50 on two days of the week - not bad considering that a monthly shop would take me a whole morning and they are over 15 miles away. Ocado (Waitrose) and Asda have also realised we are here. I reckon that even if I have to pay £5 for a delivery it is worth it in terms of time and petrol saved. Our local Tesco is like a large corner shop, more concerned with selling DVDs and stationery and magazines than carrying large packets of storecupboard items.

Like the previous poster, I have also noticed that large packets in Tescos sometimes cost more than the smaller packets. I am also disappointed that their 'Deals' vouchers seem to have less and less appeal to someone who is trying to live frugally and locally. I wish I could get 4 x the face value of points off something we actually need!
