I am off to the USA for a week in November, does anyone have any hints on getting cheap car hire or promotional codes for the main car hire conpanies

Hi Lossieglen,

You should be able to get reasonably good rates for November, depending on what state(s) you are visiting. Florida tends to be one of the cheapest. If you have a frequent flyer account with one of the airlines, they will usually have a discount code, or something similar.

A good price comparison site to use is: https://www.rent-a-car-online.com

Always be careful to compare "like with like" and try to get a rate with insurance (CDW/LDW) included, as this can often cost as much, or more, as the actual "base rate".

At £109pw fully inclusive for an economy car, it's certainly the cheapest I've come across! They've recently sent through the car hire voucher by email (I go at Christmas to Florida), so they seem to be on the ball.

I agree with the above, Airline network are about the cheapest.  https://www.holidayautos.com is also pretty good and will price match anyone else.

Must do:   You must get the MAX or GOLD extras, this gives you a free tank of fuel and you can return it empty.  Fuel has increased in the USA quite a lot, it;s still far cheaper than the UK but they will charge you about £30 for fuel when you pick the car up. If you book the MAX or gold upgrade here it can be as little as £10 and nothing to pay there.

You should book in the UK and don't wait until you get there as it will cost lots more due to insurance.

Book a small car here and when you arrive they will usually upgrade for £3 a day. Cheaper than booking a larger car here. I got a convertable for £8 a day upgrade it was great!!!

Most airports will have the hire cars and you get to choose which car you want from the size you booked.

Just remember they drive on the wrong side of the road

do the cheapest car hire I have seen. I've used them 4 times now for different states and nobody comes close!
They seem to have a deal with "Dollar" car rental so it is a reputable hire car outfit.
