Recorded Delivery 'addressee unknown'..

I posted an items by 1st Class Recorded Delivery on Monday, 7/4/08. Today I noticed on RM's 'Track & Trace' that the parcel was being returned to me 'because the item wasn’t picked up by the recipient, or because we couldn't deliver it'.
I found the phone no for the Sorting Office and queried why it was on it's way back to me. After all I'd only posted it on Monday. I was told the information they had was simply that 'addressee unknown'. I checked the address they had for the parcel and it matched the address listed on both ebay and Paypal. (On Paypal it was a 'confirmed' address). I also double checked my orange Recorded Delivery receipt for the address details of where I'd actually sent it.
(Hope you are still with me...)
I have pulled the buyers details this morning and rung to explain there appeared to have be a problem with the delivery.
My Buyer has confirmed the postal address was correct and that she was not left a RM card for any parcel.
Can someone please help?
Can I claim from Royal Mail for their mix up?
What Claim Form do I ask for?
Is it available at the Post Office or do I phone somewhere for it?
Thanks.

ther could be a number of reasons.
plenty of people dont know their actual address
eg they live a 5 3f3 but just use 5/3
the packet could have been damaged nmeaning the address is illegible
perhaps wait until the item is returned and see whats what0 -
Yes, I would wait to see what the post office returns as there could be a number of reasons (e.g. like previously mentioned, the delivery address is no longer intact)
If all is as it should be, double check the address details Vs the postcode using the royal mail website.
If this shows the same as the way you addressed the item, I think you would have a basis for complaint against Royal Mail.
Btw, I would agree with the buyer that no card was left. If Royal Mail had attempted to deliver but did not get a response (e.g. no one in at time of delivery), they would hold the item for 7 days (to allow collection) before returning. In this instance, as they are returning before this time, it does seem Royal Mail were not able to identify the property for some reason."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
