Declined mortgage

We are first time buyers and had our mortgage declined. We then got our credit files and they were fine. So we have gone back to the building society for further details and supposedly we were declined because of a repossession.
Well this is impossible.
A) when we checked our credit files they said no repossessions.
we have never had a property to be reposessed or had credit for a car or sofa or any other item that could be repossessed.
Any ideas where we can go from here?

Quit your job, get a child (order one online perhaps ? :P, i heard angelina got a good deal)
Get a council house...
Sorted.
No seriously, I'd go to another lender to find out if you have a respossesion on file and prove you have never been repossedd. Could be indentity theft.0 -
Lender is bradford and bingley.
Got credit file from checkmyfile so we would get all three at once.0 -
Are you both definitely First Time Buyers? Do you trust that your partner does not have some shady history with a repossession lurking in the background? If so then don't start approaching other lenders, appeal to your current lender. Ask them what their appeals process is and advise them that you are both definitely first time buyers, and have never had a mortgage before or owned a property to have been repossessed. It may be that they are somehow confusing you with a family member, or that there is just a mistake on your credit file linking you to someone else with a simiilar name.0

Yep, both definitely first time buyers with no shady pasts - i've looked at his credit files too!
Does this happen often? Is it a fault with the credit file that isn't showing up on checkmyfile? Or a fault with the lender?0 -
A repossession wouldnt normally show on the credit file. It shows on the CML (Council of Mortgage Lenders) Repossessions Register.
Also, it's certainly not common, though not unheard of.0 -
As luckyfool states
Do not apply elsewhere until you have sorted this.
Appeal and supply copies of your file to see if there is something you are missing or that differs from their checks. It will help them if they can see what you can see and you can at least say with confidence that you were prudent in the information that you gave.
I would imagine any mortgage company would show on there as checked the file and also put the payment history up. Unless it was over 6 years ago that is.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
