Did you actually read all of my post - you seem to have missed the point by a country mile?

Most speeding tickets never get anywhere near a court because the accused is bullied into accepting the fixed penalty. Is that simple enough for you?

 Yes I read you post and yes you are simple enough for me to understand, just can't understand where the bullying comes from ? how does this occur, and is it common.

Speed limits often desrve no respect and are cash cows for the local Safety (what a joke) Camera Partnership enabling it to grow like an out of control cancer.

Or perhaps the real reason for these stupidly low limits is to raise more cash?

The only reason speed limits are 'Cash Cows' is because people break them, they would not raise a penny if people stuck to the limits.

Despite your opinion they are there for reasons, I would suggest go to a few RTA's where people have been killed or seriously injured and sort out the mess and aftermath of accidents caused by speeding drivers, but I suspect you will not change your mind until it is one of your family or relatives that is killed.

have you not seen that ad with the little girl and speed kills, the speed limits are there for a reason, would you rather your son/daughter dies from the injuries from a car hitting her at 40mph or your son/daughter being alive as they were hit by a car doing 20mph,

i would rather teach them good road safety skills.

How are they acting as judge and jury? Are you not offered the chance to contest it?

It's a FIXED PENALTY. Do you not understand the meaning of the word "fixed"?

At the end of the day, getting a speeding ticket is ENTIRELY VOLUNTARY. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and telling you to drive too fast. If you're so incompetent that you cannot drive at or below the speed limit, you should hand in your licence as you're obviously incapable of controlling your vehicle and are a danger to the rest of us.

why do they not offer us the chance to pay a fixed penalty fine on other crimes, such as drug dealing, robbery, theft?
the point is,if the crime was about safety then there would be a real system in place to see if what the police or in a lot of cases camera operatives have found is true, and meets all criteria.

How does a fine through the post weeks after the event prevent an accident?

Why aren't the alternatives already used in other countries being explored?

As an entirely unrelated point, systems used in other countries prevent accidents directly without making money for the government.

It is called a deterrent, with a bit of luck if people keep getting points on their licence it eventually takes them off the road thereby preventing them from causing accidents.

    .

It certainly focuses your mind on having a clue as to what speed you are travelling at in the future, and after your second and third ticket, suprisingly you tend to be more speed aware?

So what is the answer ? dont enforce speed limits ? and leave it to the great unwashed and clueless to bat round how they like ? People talk about speed limits and inappropriate speeds, the actual speed is not always the cause of the accident, it is always the organic thing hanging on for grim death and a lot of them should not really be travelling at any speed, a lot shouldnt even be driving full stop, unfortunately observations and planning is not in their vocabulary, in fact most speeders didnt even see the bright yellow camera box and the slab sided speed van, but boy can they whinge and whine

After 30 years in the job, 22 years on traffic including motorway and City and still serving, I rarely if ever come across someone who says "I wasnt speeding" most are honest, apologetic, or give an earth shattering reason why they were speeding, and boy can they tell porkies  .

Rarely if ever have I come across someone who said "Nope I was travelling at xx" But i'm sure someone will tell me why people just dont say that kind of thing ?

Dealing on a one to one also led to a high degree of discretion and the application of the world famous attitude test. The problem now, in my humble opinion, is down to automation, one can't talk to a camera and that's what gripes people, they can't have their say, also society has become far more how can I avoid this, what technicality can I exploit and use, and more importantly WHY ME, amazing how many of the the expert drivers there are on these type of boards, but rarely do I see them on the roads? funny old world.

Pedestrians are very very rarely hit by vehicles doing such speeds, since they have usually been hard on the brakes for several seconds.

Personally I'd rather children were taught how to use roads, rather than blame the motorist.

Why not prevent them from causing accidents by actually slowing them down at the location they were speeding?

That's called 'accident prevention', as carried out in countries more focused on preventing accidents than raising money.
