does that mean pulling teeth out? i have all 4 wisdom teeth and they was a right pain coming out there wasnt enough room for them so would i be able to have them removed so there was more room for my front teeth to move back?

Very possibly, but I couldn't say without seeing them - and even then I probably couldn't say, as I'm not an orthodontist!!

That's why I'm saying don't run before you can walk!! Get used to going regularly, and having treatment without it sending you into a panic.

It would be best to ask your dentist's opinion on what would be necessary to improve the looks. He's the guy on the ground.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I'm sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere, but after scanning this thread I can't see anyone being charged as much as I have been quoted.

My dentist checked my gums after changing a veneer last week and he told me that I would need to see a periodontalist and I had three choices:

    1. NHS - A huge waiting list that could take years. By that time it would be too late.

    2. Their surgery has a periodontalist who comes once a month. He would charge me £100 for the first consultation (bring toothbrush) and the total for two sessions (half-mouth each time) would be £700.

    3. Going 'Private' - This would cost twice as much as their periodontalist.

Can this really be true? It cost me £400 to get a new veneer and that involves lab-work (although I think this is too much). But paying at least £700 for deep-cleaning seems absurd. In the numbering system dentists use, I was mainly between 3 and 5 with a few 6s and 7s thrown in.

He also gave me a prescription for Metronidazole to clear up an infection in the gums.

Anyone had to pay this much? Or is this normal pricing for this kind of thing?

I'm afraid to say that seems about right. Last year I got referred to a specialist periodontist. I paid £75 for the first inspection, then had two sessions of deep-cleaning at about £400 a time, and a follow up inspection of £128. I'm now seeing his hygenist every 6 months - just had an hour long session, measuring the pockets, cleaning etc and that was £120.

The good news is it has all worked - my pockets are now mostly 2s and 3s whereas before there 7s, 8s and even 9s! So it is definitely worth it, but unfortunately it will cost you, and you will probably need to keep on top of it for ever.
