April 16th - Cut car costs

I know there is limited time available but any chance of looking at the cost of servicing? How come a main dealer can charge £200+ while a similar service carried out by a chain or independent is often less than £100.
How come my dealer wanted £95+vat for new front pads when similar are available on the web for £19+delivery+vat and I managed to get a set fitted for £45 ish (inc parts and vat).
Do we really need the car serviced as often as the manual says (or is that overkill simply to allow dealers to make money)? If the service is so important then how come on more than one occasion a filter has been out of stock but yet the dealer has said they will fit it next service (no rush to bring car back in to get it fitted)?
Does doing a service yourself really save you that much when you consider the wastage of your own time?

I think the official dealers charge soo much is because they know some people dont know they can get it cheaper. noone in my family has ever taken a car to an official dealer if something needs fixing on it - we either take it to a local garage or give it to my dad to fix
cant do that now though as he is v.busy with work
