Personally I don't think you do. Whenever we have had problems with our equipment we're rung them up and threatened to cancel our subs if they don't come out and fix it free of charge. It always works. I won't bother with ins.

This insurance is not worth the money. If the box does go wrong (very small chance) they will only charge you £65 to come out and fix the problem. This charge covers any work they have to do to get your system working again.

I had a major problem a while back, and told them that if they wanted to charge me the callout fee, they could cancel my contract. They immediately told me there would be no charge.

They ended up coming out 4 times for the same problem. Changed everything in the setup (2 boxes (changed 3 times), cables from the dish and new dish). I ended up with a specialist engineer booked out to my place for 8 hours. All for no charge.

If I have a problem again, I will tell them the same. They are unlikely to want to lose your custom over the callout fee. If the normal person on the helpline can't waive the fee, ask to be put through to cancellations. They'll waive it straight away.

We had Sky (not Sky+) installed in 2003 and we haven't had any problems with the equipment so far........and we've never paid for their insurance cover either.

If I suggest you don't waste your money on their insurance, you won't bash me if you have a problem will you?

I wouldn't bother (and haven't), for the following reason... £80 per year

The parts likely to fail, the LNB and the digibox can be easily replaced and will cost less than £10 for the LNB, a decent secondhand box without accessories can be had for less than £30. Remember that Sky will only exchange your faulty digibox for a 'refurbished', i.e. secondhand, box without accessories.

If you replace the digibox yourself and you subscribe to any premium channels, a call to Sky will tie the card to your new box, give them your viewing card no. and the serial no. off the box.

Alternatively, if anything goes wrong and you are still subscribing to Sky, ring them for service and say that you won't pay for the callout (I think it's £65 now) and insist that they end your subscription. In my experience they will send someone to repair it for free rather than lose a subscriber... :D
