Changing telephone provider?

Hi everyone

I've been reading some of the comments on the Forum about cheaper telephone/broadband providers and it seems like Talk Talk would be quite a bit cheaper than BT. From what I can see, I wouldn't need to have my line with BT either.
Would I be declined with Talk Talk because I am now BR?
Also, I am currently paying a higher monthly figure to BT because of difficulty I had paying two previous bills-would I need to clear any money owing first with BT, do you think, before applying to anyone else?
Like someone else's comment I was reading on here a short while back, nothing seems simple!
I'm trying to think of any possible way to reduce my monthly outgoings and there doesn't seem like there's much scope in any other area.

Thanks to you all x

  • Hi,

I changed to Talk Talk from BT - they just took over the line, & I kept my old number. I've just checked my account history & I changed over in Oct 2007. I didn't have any problems, but thinking back I hadn't owed BT any money, plus I'd had an ED the previous month, so all of that combined could have made a difference.

I think the best thing is for you to ring them without giving your details & ask them how they'd feel about someone moving over to them who'd gone BR owing BT money. It might be that they do have an issue with it, but they could just as easily offer you an account but with a low credit limit (mine's £100) & insist on payment by direct debit to lessen the chance of a bill going unpaid.

Hi, i am in the process of trying to change to Talk Talk at the minute, they were the only company taht i could get my line rental with apart from BT. I went BR on 2nd April, i owe BT £80 i think it was for my last set of charges this doesnt include any calls either its just the line rental & all the high fee's they charge if your late with payment, reconnection etc. I just put this down on the unsecured debt's along with my gas & electricity lol.
So far everything seems to be going through, i have a date of the 26th to 'go live' with TT, and i received a letter from BT yesterday saying they will be ending my contract on 17th. I am still in my 12 month contract with BT so im not sure how that will work because i think they charge you £70 to leave, i'll probably have to pay that but i was told that if i go BR they would terminate my line anyway so we will have to see what happens later in the month.

I was paying about £50 a month, for my Broadband, Line rental & charges, if i can change to Talk Talk this will be just £20 & ill get so many free calls to mobiles too :rotfl:
  • Thanks for that information wherediditallgo and roxy-it's really useful and gives me the confidence to ring up to make the initial enquiry. Talk Talk , as you say, also seems like a cheaper option to BT.
If I haven't included any debt with BT on my SOA because I didn't think I would be able to get another provider, would I include it at this stage or try and clear the account, even if Talk Talk do accept me?
Hope that makes sense because my thinking is really cluttered at the moment.
Although, as you sggest, Roxy, maybe it's possible that BT will seek to terminate my contract anyway now that I am BR
    Thanks again

I wouldn't bother asking if they would accept a BR or someone owing money to BT, just apply. It takes about 28 days for your line to change anyway. I think I owed BT money when I changed over but I wasn't BR at the time.
