How much weight could I lose in 6 months?

Options
I have a 6 month deadline and I was wondering what I could realistically lose at a safe rate in this period. I am currently 13 stones and 3 pounds and a size 18, completely lazy and I eat chocolate when I am bored at work. I have my home gym ready to go and have locked up my debit cards so no more chocolate. Help me set a realistic target please! Would love to reach a size 14.

Sustainable weight loss is 1 - 2lbs a week. Working it out at 1lb a week weightloss over 24 weeks would be 24lb, which is 1 stone 10lb, which would make a big difference.

You may lose a bigger amount to begin with, but it will settle. There are several weightloss threads in the forum. Theres the Slimming world and ww support threads here, theres I wanna lose weight, in the Iwanna section, and weightloss the OS way in the oldstyle moneysaving bit. These will give you lots of support and help you with sensible eating.

The easiest way to lose weight is to eat less and move more

    Hope that helps
  • Slimming World is great, i have lost 1 and half stone so far, i am losing weight for my wedding in september so i too don't have long - the best thing with Slimming World is you can eat loads and you never feel hungry - you can even eat chocolate if you like just not a huge bar :p

if you wanted to join an actual group go on their website and put your post code in and it will tell you were your nearest group is, if you don't want to join a group go on the Slimming World thread as there are loads of members with lots of weight losing ideas for you

    good luck x

I joined weight watchers in October and in 6 months I managed to lose 2 stones 7 llbs. I started off at 13 stones. I didn't go to a gym but I incorporated exercise in my everyday routine (walked part way to work - parked further away so had a 20 min walk each way, used the stairs rather than lift, etc). I too tend to eat when I am bored, so I prepared things to eat for when that happens, eg fruit, etc, rather than tell myself that I won't eat anything. I started off as a size 16 (nearly going onto a size 18) and I am now a size 12.

Good luck with your weight loss. Don't see it as a diet but as a change in lifestyle - it's easier to think of it that way.

After listening to Gary Taubes Berkley lecture I understood why I was putting on weight. So I started this low carb diet plan. basically because I am lazy and didn't want anything that involved counting calories, buying special foods, going to meetings or anything special or involving spending money.
The really great thing about it is I've lost my urge to drink so have saved a packet on booze and lost my craving for food so eating less is no problem and there are no hunger pangs leading me to raid the fridge.

You can see I've nearly lost 2 stone in 12 weeks so I should with a bit of luck be at my target weight in the next 3 months.

There is an excellent active low carb forum here. that has lots of different low carb plans.

The only change I have made is to swap to using Coconut oil (Indian grocers £1 500g) I've also bought some ketosticks but they aren't necessary. I just bought them out of interest as folks on the forum were talking about them.

There are lots of health benefits to eating a low carb way apart from losing weight. Dr McCleary recommends it for your brain health and I'm certainly much sharper and less tired than before. Dr Davis Heartscanblog recommends it for diabetes and heart problems.

i went on the atkins diet, lost loads of weight really quickly and never felt hungry.

    BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    PLEASE DONT DO THIS DIET

IT CAUSED ME TO HAVE GALLSTONES WHICH THEN LEAD TO ME HAVING TO HAVE MY GALLBLADDER REMOVED.

STICK TO A LOW FAT DIET AND MORE EXERCISE AND YOU WON'T GO WRONG.

The diet I am doing is NOT ATKINS. SEE THE LINKs PROVIDED. -

Listen to the evidence provided listen to the Gary Taubes Berkley lecture
This is the type of diet our bodies evolved to cope with.

whilst i dont want to get into yet another atkins debath can i just say that atkins does not cause u to have gallstones, its something u are predisposed to have

in fact there are some studies that say if u have done lowfat for a long time u are more likely to get stones but as i said its something u are predisposed to

i have been on atkins for over 4yrs and lost 8stone 5lbs and now maintain using atkins principles.. if u want to find out more seek out one of the atkins boards for more information . i use the ivillage one as its UK based

the success of any diet is down to you so no one can say how much u will lose, if u are disciplined and stick to it as well as exercise u will have good results and thers no reason u couldnt reach a 14 in 6months

    good luck

The recommended daily calorie intake varies depending on how old you are. For the average adult this is about 2,000 -2,500 per day. These calories should be made up of foods from the main food groups.
If you're trying to lose weight, you could start by eating 500 less calories per day. This should help as long as your diet is well-balanced and you're getting lots of exercise.

Of course this does depend on the age of the person.. The older a person is the less calories the require, this is why people when they get to the age of about 50 they gain weight because they don't reduce their calories.

When you exercise make sure its for 30minutes + because we need to use up all our carbohydrates (which is our main energy source) before we can enter our fat stores (Which is the second energy source we use). Also try and do weight bearing exercise to build up muscle because muscle burns calories lots quicker.

There is a free Calorie Calculator For Daily Calorie Needs here
and while I agree that reducing calories will result in less weight gain and possibly weight loss there are other factors at work that mean you can still lose weight, at the rate I have done, while still consuming more calories than your daily needs.

If you find that paper hard going just look at the figure 1 to see how you can gain more weight on constant intake when insulin levels are high. You may also find it easier to skip to the end of the article and just read the last few paragraphs, as they also explain what is happening.

I certainly don't want to put anyone off exercising. I concede I may have lost even more weight had I been able to exercise, I just don't want anyone to think that exercise is an essential component to weight loss. My example proves it isn't.

Why most of us believe that exercise makes us thinner—and why we're wrong.

Those who are interested in the science of dieting may like to read this paper which is a survey of what people on an Atkins Type diet actually achieve in practice.
