A&L Default - will they accept an offer?

Hello all
Looking through my credit report I have just seen my A&L loan is in default...
I can nly imagine it must have happened when I changed bank accounts bank in 2004 looking at my credit record payment were perfect through the £5,000 loan then to approx 5 months from ending and I get 1,2,3,4,8..... hence default.
I cannot recall getting any letters or anything from them....if I had I would have sorted it, I can only think I sort of never noticed - (not a good excuse but legitimate) I was not on top of finances then - ie logging every payment/debit etc. As I do since my lightbulb moment.
But I have the money to pay them, but would love them to remove the default....is that possible if I pay in full. Or reinstate the loan and remove the default then.
What sort of letter would you suggest to start with I admit I had the loan admit it looks like I did go into default (through ignorance but thats no defence I know) but how would you word the letter?
I asume contacting by letter is better than contacting by phone.
Thanks sorry its long, thanks for trawling through this post.
