Income Tax Rebate

Hi

Not being very clued up on things like this, and with the Inland Revenue's ( or whatever they're called now ) website being so damned difficult to navigate i thought i'd ask you guys.
A few years ago i worked for a bank, then went abroad to work and have only just returned, while throwing out paperwork i looked through my old payslips and while not 100% sure i don't think i ever got a tax rebate from my first 2 months emergency tax.
Does anyone know how i can find out, without contacting my old employers as they were less than helpful and gave me the runaround.

Phone or write to the Tax man, I think you can only go back 6 years to claim a rebate. The taxman does not automatically pay rebates you have to apply for it. Do you have a P60 for the year you want to claim a rebate for?

And be prepared for a long wait. I'm up to 3 months waiting now despite chasing mine up several times and its only for the last tax year. They're definately quicker to take than to give!!

Be prepared for HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs - New name for the IR and C&E) to ask you to complete forms P86 - Leaving the UK, and P85 - Entering the UK as well if you did not do this when you originally left, and came back.

Are you sure? My wife has had "automatic" rebates for several years. Sometimes they're reasonably quick, otherwise I believe if they're paid after January the following tax year they add on a "little" interest.

It all depends on the situation, and can be rather hit and miss. Sometimes you will just get a refund out of the blue without you taking any action.

Other times you may get a letter asking for more information to enable a refund to be made.

Other times you will get nothing unless you write or phone to ask for a refund.

The same goes for being sent bills.

Don't rely on your tax automatically being checked, and you hearing nothing meaning you paid the correct amount. Always check your P60, and if you moved jobs throughout the year, always check.
