Hi

Just wondered what the situation is with registering for PAYE self employment while being on incapacity benefit. Is it allowed? I currently mystery shop and TNS are changing to PAYE and have to register with HMRC but wasnt sure whether it would affect my being on IB? (shouldnt be on the benefit much longer now as am hoping to get back to some form of work soon:D)

  • Hi

I work for a charity that supports people form health related benefits back towards employment so can advise you on a few options:

You could declare the earnings under the permitted work scheme where you are alowed to work part time without it affecting your incapacity benefit. There is a lower and higher limit for this which have different rules attached to them. You will be able to get info about this on the websites for CAB, money matters, Jobcentre etc. Be wary though if you have an income support element to your claim as this also affects the earnings allowed.

Also if you are thinking about going back to work you might want to think about contacting one of your local New Deal for Disabled People providers as many of them can offer a job start grant of up to £400 on starting work!!! The term disabled can put many people off approaching these organisations but they can actually help anyone on a IB, IS, DLA etc. Depending on the area you live in you might also be able to some other payments.

Hope you find something that is right for you soon!!! Good luck!!

yeah I am alraedy on the permitted work scheme for doing the mystery shop before they bought it in on 1st april that you have to be registered self employed and sort your own tax etc out which is what puzzled or confused me what I have to do with being on IB (I dont have an IS element though, just long term IB and the age addition

Im goling to get in touch with the local jobcentre this week and get an appointment and help from them
