Help - non existant Sky debt passed to debt collectors

My parents cannot get freeview so paid for Sky to be installed to get free channels. They were sent an offer for half price movies which they took and then cancelled in the given timeframe . Sky tried to take the next months money but couldn't. Parents rang and were told not to worry, it was all cancelled. They got another bill, rang again to be told it was all being dealt with - ignore. Today they get a call from a debt collector trying to get the cash and telling them they have to pay because they didn't send the equipment back! The equipment is theirs they paid for it when they 'went digital'
What should they do now?

did they get the cancellation in writing?I often think about The Samuel Vimes 'Boots' Theory Of Socio-Economic Injustice. :cool:0

No, sky don't do that. Everything, I think, is phone calls. You know 'call this number to cancel' - which they did and rung back too when bills carried on coming. Now £100 per debt collector.
We have rung sky today who say nothing is owing! I have asked for that to be put in writing.
So, it looks like the o/s debt is for equipment (like the collector said) never supplied by Sky.
The debt collector is going back to Sky and asking them about the equipment and said we should call again in a week. I don't think that is quick enough need to get things moving.0 -

Just cancelled with sky and got a letter confirming the cancelation. Also states that should I wish to come back they can reconnect me quicker than I can say "Bart". Shows how seriously sky take losing customers:rolleyes:0 -
The cancellation taking effect doesn't seem to be the problem as Sky have it cancelled on their system from the right day and they certainly couldn't get any of the channels once it took effect. Sky have now been asked for the cancellation to be put in writing so it can be used to show the debt collectors.
However, what the Debt Collectors are claiming, is not that there are any charges for viewing due, but the equipment needs to be paid for or returned. It's my parents own equipment - you can buy sky from a TV shop and have it installed for a couple of hundred pounds to get 'free sky digital'. That is what they did last year - well before the offer - because we are all going digital in this area soon and we don't get freeview so we have had to find another option - Free Sky(except for the one off couple of hundred fee) is one of those options.0
