Hi, due to finish work soon, so will need a printer for printing letters, but not sure which is the best one, not sure whether I would use a colour or photo printer but can someone point me to the best value ones that do not cost a fortune for cartridges??

All depends on what you want to spend. Since you are going to be at home the office photo copier will no longer be available to you either so you might want to consider an All in One.
According to Computer Shopper the Canon pixma MP 520 is pretty good.
